Planned might be overstating things...Advantage of equatorial is you get 24/7 coverage of any spot in the narrow equatorial region with fewer satellites. ie there is a satellite above you, plus others to relay message to a base station. This is essentially always on network so can be used for anything requiring low bandwidth like text messaging, eftpos, voice.
Advantage of global is that you can call it global.Essentially global constellation is good if you are prepared wait for sat to be overhead - then overhead a base station. Anything relying on real-time data is not going to work. Devices either need to know sat position or just keep retrying to send message.
Equatorial is more useful technically, gut feel is that if you are paying for a satellite link for your IOT device you want it to provide real time data. Global gives limited access to more well off regions, equatorial provides better service to relatively poor regions.
