Yes, the deal has to happen. We'd be battling to bring the SP back to anything like fair value if it falls over. I've been nervous about it for quite some time as BGH are VC's and without doubt being opportunistic. I've got more VRL shares now than I want in a balanced portfolio and agree there's not enough in it to be topping up.
If the deal fell over and the SP dropped back to $1.75 would I buy more? No. Maybe at $1.25. Anyway, fingers crossed for all holders that $2.32 / $2.40 goes ahead, it's the best we can hope for.
With a very small free float, it's always been an interesting company to own - trading volumes have been very low the whole time I've been in it.
