It's not selling to themselves. I didn't see the setup but this is very common, so an example

Buyers in pre-open 50,000 at 13
One seller in pre-open 10,000 at 13

BOT buyer wants them ahead of all the buyers at 13, so bids 9,999 at 13.5

Matched at open, BOT gets 9,999 at 13, first buyer at 13 gets the 1, leaving 49,999 still bid at 13

Only possible in the pre-open and pre-close price discovery markets, as even a BOT can't queue-jump in the open market


I can't tell you how many times I have been the poor b'stard given the 1, then having to wait for the balance
