Just looking at some interesting videos on mining drilling techniques to pass a bit of time.

Here is one on long hole drilling which is used in narrow vein mining (and for other in mine applications) by dilling box cuts (stope ore passes) from the bottom up between horizontal crosscut levels. In this example the box cuts are 1.5m x 1.5m wide.



The second video shows raise bore drilling which can create holes up to 8m wide over hundreds of metres. The hole being drilled in the video is for a 1km deep ventilation shaft for a gold mine in Northern Quebec, I’m not sure of the diameter but it looks big. A hole is first drilled down to a designated mine opening where a big reaming head is attached which is pulled up and reams the large diameter hole. Pretty impressive stuff IMO. Esh
