I visited the site on 20 July, and I asked Andrew Sorensen who showed my brother and me around the site and the plant. I would have liked to have raised more questions, but Andrew has a job to do, so I did not want to take up more of his time asking questions that would have been inappropriate for him to divulge.
One apprehension that I had was the difficulty of hiring staff. Andrew has since mentioned that FIFO workers who lived in the area are keen to work for WA Kaolin, and that he has many job applications that he has had to turn down for now. He did say that in earlier years, he too shared that concern.
I spoke to a few staff, and quizzed one who commuted 75k each way, and he seemed to be a very happy employee. There is some car pooling, and only working four days a week seems to have taken the sting out of the commuting issue.
