Very few Kalina cycle power plants have ever been built. The first built for the utilization
of low temperature geothermal waters, opened in Hsavk, Iceland in the year 2000. From
the start it was bedeviled by problems, many of them associated with corrosion of the
turbine and nozzle vanes which caused the plant to shut down repeatedly and to operate at
significantly lower efficiency and lower power output than was promised by the design.
Ultimately the original turbine was replaced in 2004 and corrosion of the turbine ceased to
be a problem. However the second turbine failed catastrophically in January of 2008 the
cause of the failure remains unexplained. From January 2008 until the present time, the
Hsavk power plant has been out of operation and the future of the power plant is unclear.
Ultimately this thesis is an attempt to understand, at least partly, the early problems of the
Kalina cycle power plant in Hsavk so that in the future the benefits of Kalina cycle
power plants can be realized without the difficulties associated with the plant in Hsavk.
