I've seen single-income tradies work their hearts out to provide for their family and use lay-by to put money aside for their kid's birthday Nintendo so that they wouldn't squander it at the races or pub and they were either averse or couldn't qualify for a credit card.
They'd turn up to BIG W every week with $50 cash from their business earnings and the little one would co-contribute $20 from chores. It was so nice to see stuff like that and it taught kids good financial habits and the value of saving and waiting for a big reward.
