Prosthetic joint infections are a major problem in orthopaedic prosthetic surgery and can take weeks or even many months to show up. Revision surgery is required and long-term antibiotic treatment. Even so, prosthetic joint infections can lead to amputation or death.

Prosthetic joint infections represent a major economic burden. A 2017 study found that the modeled cost of a 65-year-old individual undergoing revision surgery as a consequence of infection following hip replacement surgery was US$ 390,806.

Each year, in the US alone, 2 million fracture fixture devices, 800,000 knee prosthetics and 450,000 hip prosthetics are inserted.
