I wouldn't say its fairly new, been around over 10 years.... but yes only now really hitting mainstream.
My thoughts are chiplets will allow multiple nodes, multiple types of chiplets to be combined into a single chip, e.g. CPU, GPU, Memory of all types, but it will not be cheap, probably only used for high end devices and not embedded.

It does mean you could have 28nm NAND flash or 12nm ReRAM next to the 4nm CPU, so yeah its a packaging arrangement, not a competitor
