Chiplets are a fairly new concept. You will have heard about SoC (System on a Chip). Building an SoC can produce a large and complex chip and within it there can be multiple points of failure during manufacture. This can result in low manufacturing yields which is obviously expensive. Chiplets may solve this issue by dividing the functions of an SoC into various modules, with each module taking care of one or some of the functions. Because each module or chiplet is less complex, yields can be much higher therefore manufacturing can be much cheaper.

The chiplets to comprise all the required functions can be mounted on a single substrate. The issue that is receiving a great deal of research currently is the optimisation of connectivity between chiplets. Connectivity standards are being developed.

A single chaplet could contain, for example, a processor or memory. It could contain a Weebit memory module. Thus a chiplet is not a competitor to Weebit, it is merely a novel packaging arrangement.

I'm happy to be corrected if anyone has better information.
