LWD - an instrument located just behind the cutting tool which sends impulsed info. through the drilling mud back to the top for analysis (similar info as a wire line and these two are correlated in final analysis). The disadvantage is that LWD is recorded on the run and so may not pin point the exact location for perforations. This may be different now that the hole is already drilled. It does have some advantages : "One of the great advantages of logs LWD compared to those obtained after drilling is that the tool measures the petro physical properties of the geological formations still in its semi virgin state, in other words, long before they are invaded by the mud used in drilling. For this reason, the data obtained by these tools are not exactly identical to those obtained by wire line or TLC."
Porosity is the pore space between the grains of sand where oil resides (relates to volume of oil in reservoir). Permeability is the ability of that oil to flow through the reservoir medium. A successful well must have a combination of both.
