Sorry, I do not think you have got it right.
Firstly, someone shorting the stock is likely to be a share trader. Capital gains tax does not apply as they are not investing, but rather trading. Income tax at normal rates applies.
Secondly, they only realise the profit or loss when they close out their position. So in other words there was no need to pump the stock pre June, then wait for the price to settle back post June. Quite simply they did not need to pump the stock, the sock price would have just stayed at say 24c and they close their position out on 1 July and realise the profit on 1 July.
Pre June there was a lot of people buying. Maybe they were shorters, closing out their positions (and realising their profit pre June) , maybe not.
Post June (yesterday) there was a avalanche of sellers, maybe shorters, maybe not. If it was shorters selling yesterday to my mind they are betting on the price going lower.
Or someone is playing with the price for a reason.
Just my thoughts.
