The short answer is yes but more likely on exploration and less likely on appraisal wells which is WE3.
From reading the press releases, 17 1/2" hole is planned to be drilled to around 2,800m. We already know that there are two large downhole motors cemented in and sidetracked around.

Not knowing what has happened since then other than a post stating that they are drilling ahead, lets make the assumption that they will get to 2800m.....which is no mean feat. In fact, it may be an Australian first but happy to be corrected if anyone knows of any other well in Australia that has drilled 17 1/2" and run 13 3/8" casing successfully to a similar depth.

I would expect the casing to weigh 68 lb/ft......so doing the maths and allowing for the buoyancy, it will be around 575,000 lbs excluding drag when getting close to total depth. Checking Ensign 970 mast rating on there website, I noted it is rated for 750,000 lbs, so in theory, all good......but most contractors will not allow the drawworks to pull to 100% of the mast rating.

Bottom line, it will be great news to not only get to the prognosed TD, but get the casing run and cemented in place without any mishap.

Between Strikes engineers, Ensign rig crews, casing running specialists and cementing engineers, they will fully be aware of the task at hand and have planned accordingly.
