I saw that recently with NRW- a large buy order was made only minutes before the closing auction and caused a spike- and the auction reverted to a lower price- had the buyer waited until the auction they would have got in at a lower price. Ignorance or algorithm malfunction?
For many stocks it is mostly the institutions and well heeled in the open and closing and us smaller fry during the bulk of the day.
