The Bulong Nickel Mine, situated near Bulong, Western Australia, had a relatively short operational lifespan of just four years. Despite its brevity, it left a lasting legacy of environmental pollution. Let’s delve into the challenges faced by the Bulong mine:

1. Financial Failure:

   • The mine operated for only a brief period and faced financial difficulties.
   • Unfortunately, these financial woes contributed to the mine’s eventual abandonment.

2. Environmental Impact:

   • The primary environmental concern stems from the mine’s failed tailings facility.
   • This facility, which was unable to contain the waste effectively, has caused heavy pollution in the surrounding environment.
   • The estimated rehabilitation liability for the tailings storage facility is approximately A$6,854,280¹.

3. Sulphuric Acid Usage:

   • Due to impurities in the ore, the Bulong Nickel Mine utilized up to 500 kilograms (1,100 lb) of sulphuric acid per tonne of ore to remove these impurities ².
