Having spent a good amount of time trying to get a private software company off the ground - using nothing revolutionary in terms of technology, I believe the only thing holding this back is time. It does take a long time to perfect software and the implementation into individual business isn't just stick the disc in and double click on Setup.
If they had the luxury of taking someone else's work and flogging it to IBM in the beginning of a new era then they could take shortcuts to future releases to a captive audience then milk it for 30 years.
