Below is an article I found and I think it perfectly sums up the issue we are addressing with our software. Can't find a date on the paper but must be relatively recent and last I checked no one has solved this puzzle.
Note the 50% of trucks empty on return journeys comment. I'm guessing that occurs with the big players too.
