Honestly, we can speculate as much as we want but only AP will know the true answer.
In saying that, my speculation is that they were hedging their bets in the event that the Zapato structure wasn't filled to spill, and they hit the crest at ~2000M and saw nothing but gas until they got halfway down the structure. I think they may have re-assessed after the events they witnessed during the recovery attempts of the broken drill string.
