My understanding is that the 300 feet refers to the overall formation depth, ie the rock type layer, whereas the 120 feet number refers to the gas or oil bearing parts of this.
120 foot is not too bad in my view; in other cases just a few feet has been productive.
I stand to be corrected on this.
