Natural gas mined and then put down pipeline to a power station to generate electricity does have a low greenhouse gas output.
However it is quite a lot more greenhouse gas when you take the same gas, compress and liquify it at enormous energy use, put it into tankers to ship around the world, and then at other end you use more energy to turn it back to gas so you can burn it.
When gas companies go on about how clean gas is they are only talking about the first one, and conveniently hope no one notices the second (more profitable) one.
Permanent damage to farmlands is a totally separate issue.
