annnoying noob - book recommendations?

I've been reading the posts here for a few weeks and to be completely honest I don't understand all the terms or references. I studied psychology and politics and work as an Advocate at a university where I basically argue for a living.

I really want to learn how to research stocks properly myself so I'm not just reliant on other people's tips - but there's no way I'm going back to Uni for 3 years to study... I'd rather study on my own. At the moment I'm signed up to the Australian Small Caps subcription, it's ok... but I'm not terribly impressed and it's just holding my hand really, I'm not learning much (I was hoping I would learn a bit more along the way)... I'd like to not need it.

I would love some reading recommendations in my attempt to skill up. Pretty please...

Sorry to be a needy noob.
