You're forgetting a very important and significant vehicle Class- Hybrids combine the consumption of the PGM for the catalytic converter with that of the metals in the battery. Quantities of PGM are identical between conventional and hybrids vehicles. Time will tell who will be the winner in the race for cleaner, more fuel-savvy vehicles and longer-living cars. In terms of longevity(very important), the diesel would be the winner today.
