Woodside Energy plans to build 150 houses in Karratha in its first increase in residential accommodation in the Pilbara region of north-western Western Australia for 15 years.

The company says the houses will be used for the construction workforce for its $12 billion Pluto project.

Woodside received environmental approval from the Western Australian Government for the project yesterday.

The company's liquified natural gas (LNG) expansion plans are filtering through to housing, with a $58 million contract for 388 camp rooms in Karratha announced earlier this week.

This adds to a 1,500 bed village being currently built, and a recent contract to expand its Searipple camp by 260 beds.

The commitment to building permanent housing has been welcomed by the Shire of Roebourne.

Meanwhile, the State Government is considering a request from Woodside to purchase the residential lots that were bought but handed back in recent Landcorp subdivisions in Karratha.

Unlike other resource companies Rio Tinto and Burrup Fertilisers, Woodside did not apply for a quota of lots in the Tambrey and Nickol West subdivisions.

In a written statement, Landcorp chief executive Ross Holt says Woodside has approached it to secure the lots initially sold by ballot that were subsequently returned to Landcorp.

Mr Holt says they are working with Shire of Roebourne to fast-track the subdivision of a new suburb called Baynton West.
