Say your a sophisticated investor who wants to unload 20 million shares, but the stock is not moving. A friend who is also a SI and would also like to unload his shares asks you to buy some of his and he will buy some of yours. As you start to buy and sell all you are losing is the brokers fee. but after a while 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 million or so shares have been traded with no news being announced.
This sparks intrest and others start to buy. the share price does not go up, but that does not matter because you can offload your shares at a 20% profit.
I'm not saying this is happening, but there has been no news announced.
