The navy has intercepted a boat suspected of carrying 53 asylum seekers northwest of Ashmore Island in the Indian Ocean.
HMAS Glenelg intercepted the boat manned by four crew on Thursday evening, Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said in a statement.
The group will be transferred to Christmas Island where they will undergo security, identity and health checks and their reasons for travel will be established.
