Navy intercepts asylum seeker boat From: AAP July 21, 2011 12:07PM A BOAT suspected of carrying 52 asylum seekers has been intercepted by the navy near Christmas Island. The vessel was initially detected by a maritime patrol aircraft, operating under the control of Border Protection Command.
It was intercepted by HMAS Bathurst northeast of Christmas Island late last night, Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said.
Initial indications suggested there were 52 passengers and two crew on board.
They will be transferred to Christmas Island pending removal to another country, the minister said.
