Mauritanian govt arrests two more army officers


Nouakchott, Mauritania, 08/24 - Mauritanian authorities on Friday arrested two more Negro-African army officers as part of investigation into the aborted coup attempt of 8 August, military sources told PANA in Nouakchott Monday.

They are Captain Kondio Omar, based in Nouadhibou military Zone (north) and Captain Diagana Chouaibou of the Selibaby military region in south-east Mauritania. Both of them hail from the southern Kaedi region.

According to the sources, Captain Kondio has already appeared for questioning before the military commission of inquiry at the navy headquarters.

Mauritanian authorities arrested about a score of soldiers for their alleged implication in a plot to topple the government on 8 August.

Confirming the arrests 36 hours, the Mauritanian defence ministry claimed the soldiers were arrested because they planned to continue what could not be accomplished during the abortive but bloody coup attempt in June 2003.

However, opposition leaders are still sceptical about the alleged coup attempt. Most of the arrested persons come from eastern Mauritania and belong to the same ethnic groups as the alleged masterminds behind the June 2003 coup attempt, who are still on the run
