All systems (even renewables) need maintenance and it tends to increase as they age due to the wear and tear.
I think the time is coming soon where when a generator fails, the owner will decide it is not economic to repair - that could lead to major supply issues unless the government steps in to prop up repairs. Renewables have made the economics for coal increasingly questionable and a planned phase out means operators have little incentive to do more than minimal maintenance - hence more failures. This is a planning failure.
