I posted the gist of that article on the DC2 thread early this morning (HC doesn't allow @fr links), here tis:

When it comes to data centres Perth seems to be the place to be at the moment:

Perth's global link spurs Equinix data centre

Nasdaq-listed Equinix will develop a $76 million data centre in Perth, its third such facility in the Western Australian capital where the market has been given a digital lift through its direct connection abroad through sub-sea cables. Perth is a major gateway for digital traffic into and out of the country.

Two 4600-kilometre submarine cables linking to Singapore are accessed by Equinix's existing Perth data facilities. A third sub-sea linkage, a 9800-kilometre line connecting Perth to Oman in the Middle East, is also under way and is expected to further boost connectivity in the Perth market.

Those linkages dramatically cut the lag in data flow, or latency, and drive demand from global cloud, network and over-the-top (OTT) providers as well as from the government, mining and resource sectors. They provides companies that currently enter Australia through Sydney with a second path for redundancy, as well as a faster route to Asia and the world, according to Guy Danskine, managing director for Equinix Australia.

"We are seeing great demand, both domestically and from our international customers who want to either expand in Perth or move into Perth," he told The Australian Financial Review. "It's half the time to get from Perth to Singapore as it is from Sydney to Singapore. It can be a game changer, depending on what applications they are trying to run."We're seeing Perth become a really important piece not just of Australia's internet infrastructure, but an important city in its own right."
