A "short period" of delay in airport operations still has significant financial consequences. The Gatwick drone disruption in December 2018 reportedly cost the aviation industry £50m ~ £1.5m per shutdown hour. Gatwick airport itself lost at least £15m in revenue (with some suggesting the final figure could be twice as high) and it since spent £4m on anti-drone technology.
