A long shot thought...do we know for a fact that it's several sharks doing the killing in the recent attacks? Maybe it's a 'rogue' shark or two.
I'm not suggesting we kill every shark in sight but culling the ones that come too close too shore too frequent may be worth a try. If it doesn't have an effect then abort the idea.
Suggesting that overfishing of tuna has overnight(a few yrs) suddenly caused an increase in fatalities close to shore is simplistic, imo. What's their favourite? Skipjack or Yellow Fin? If you read your labels you will note that only one or two supply YF tuna, it's all moved to 'sustainable'(until we threaten that species) SJ tuna. I'll bet the tuna stocks will improve and the attacks still continue. I understand that averaged over the years the number of attacks is low but over the past 3 yrs in WA they have been extremely high.
It's a suggestion for surfers and divers to try alternative protection, bright suits and electronic shield devices, but there's not much the humble swimmer can do. To argue it's 'their' domain is futile. Why has a shark every right to kill every marine species it likes when the other marine life has just as much right? Because it's bigger and king of the ocean, tough luck to other marine life who has as much right to that domain. Hence, fair or not fair, our domain encompasses land, sea and air and we are top of the food chain. Safety prevails rights.
