Things like skull and crossbones and other death symbols do seem a bit like something out of a computer game IMO.
I suppose there might be a useful effect on the enemy - worked alright for the Gestapo, SS, etc (NOTE I'm not comparing them with Aussie soldiers, just the idea of war symbols!)
