Wasn't it the opposition that brought up the idea of a bank guarantee that was flipped and flopped by the Labs until they totally botched it? Weren't the opposition screaming for pensioners to receive a substantial raise to the fortnightly pension taking effect immediately back in November? Well this fell on deaf ears, apparently the Labs didn't believe that these poor suffering Australian's were worth the far reaching effect of a sustained, long term financial stimulus.

REgarding point one both sides thought about a bank guarantee and the government introduced one that has pleased most of the electorate and increased their popularity.
REgarding point two the liberals proposed a fortnightly increase for SOME pensioners but the government provided a one off benefit for ALL pensioners greatly increasing their popularity expecially with all those who would have got nothing under the liberals proposal.
