I was quoting "The Howard Years" and that had nothing to do with the situation as stated by Costello, Downer etc. These senior Liberals stated Howard was still very popular with many Liberal faithful and if the party had "turned on him" and voted him out mnay of the faithful may have deserted the party on the eve of an election.
