@Scott th Ratbag; in Australia there's NO bottom line for those committing criminal offences since the very basis of our criminal justice system is NOT the safety of the public at large but rather the best interests of the alleged perpetrator.

If someone rapes a woman or claims to have been defamed they can first seek to employ a high powered legal team on a 'No win - no fee' basis. Their high powered legal team gets to cast slurs at and to publicly demean and humiliate the person claiming to be a victim. They can rip into 'witnesses' with absolute impunity. The alleged perpetrator doesn't even have to answer any questions.

But if anyone on our incredibly stupid jury system so much as breathes out of turn a mistrial is declared and the outcome is 'innocent until proven guilty'.

In the unlikely scenario that someone is proven to be guilty according to the verdict of a trial by jury, the accused can then appeal to successively higher courts until the the verdict is overturned at the click of a finger and for the slightest of a 'legal technicality' - as in the case of George Pell.

If all else fails Australia's criminal justice system then aims to 'rehabilitate the offender' [as in Clockwork Orange].

Of course, none of this applies to First Nations People who have a bad habit of getting shot before being tried and of dying in custody.

Disclosure: I've sought and been granted exemption from jury duty on multiple occasions.
