STRUGGLING timber company Gunns Limited has reportedly sold a sawmill in South Australia to a Mount Gambier company.
It was reported that the buyer, South East Pine sales, would retain the 18 employees.
Gunns is relying on banks to allow it to use money from asset sales to continue to pay about 580 staff -- including about 350 in Tasmania -- after recording a $904 million loss for 2011-12.
It is understood buyers have been looking at the Bell Bay softwood sawmill and the Tarpeena mill also in South Australia.
It was reported in South Australia that workers feared the would close.
