    And heres another insight:

"The S5 system is unique from all other systems you’re probably familiar with. It doesn’t use GPS or any of cellular/GSM infrastructure because it’s designed to be extremely low cost and work indoors. In fact, we are currently delivering on a contract with the U.S. Dept of Homeland Security for container tracking (inside metal containers).

The chip costs under $1, is a fully functional burst-mode DSSS transmitter (not a receiver) that transmits both location and sensor information. There are some special capabilities in the chip that make it ideal for covert, anti-jam, security services types of application. Plus, it’s extremely small in size and the battery can last for years at a time.

For our system to function, we or our partners install S5 receivers around the desired coverage area. The range in a line-of-site environment is about 50 miles, but in an urban deployment the receiver spacing is comparable to about 20% of a cellular network (i.e. deployed on about 1 out of every 5 cellular sites). We cover entire cities or regions in a typical deployment.

We will begin commercial deployments next year, but are currently working with our partners integrating the chipset into their desired products, and arranging network rollout partnerships."
