utsstudent, What I look at is:
a) the number of short sales each day; and
b) the overall number of shares short sold.
I use these two ASX sites for looking at shortsales.

the above gives the daily reported gross short sales. I look at daily short sales and daily short sales as a % of daily turnover.

the above I use to view the level of shares in total 'out there' as a % of market cap (I look at column "S" in Securities Lending Borrowed).
There are two other documents available at this site and I am quite happy for anyone to show that reading other ASX documents gives a better indication.
