The scoop: Perhaps somewhat overlooked among 2021’s crop of new drug approvals is Mayne Pharma’s Nextstellis. The oral contraceptive is a combination of the well-established medicine drospirenone and a new ingredient, estetrol, otherwise known as E4. With the approval, E4 becomes the first new estrogen to reach the market in 50 years,
according to Contemporary OB/GYN. The drug “has been shown in clinical trials to be not only safe and effective but also well tolerated with a desirable bleeding profile and minimal impact on triglycerides, cholesterol and glucose, as well as weight and endocrine markers,” Mitchell Creinin, professor and director of family planning at the University of California, said in a
statement about the drug. Citi analyst John Deakin-Bell has projected $100 million in sales for the drug in Mayne’s 2024 fiscal year,
according to the Australian Financial Review.
