An interesting bit of info is that the use of the optical sorter discarded a considerable amount of the tungsten in the ore. It was wrongly believed only the quartz contained the tungsten so they used the optical sorter to keep all the white quartz and discarded the rest of the tungsten with the waste rock. The optical sorter wouldn't have been able to sort the darker material as it was the same colour as the host rock. The XRT sorters don't care about opticals.
