I believe you don't understand the patent process.
The patent application was filed on 2/12/2014, that is the first time the patent office would have seen it, the patent office then looks to see if anything like that has been published before, that can take up to 18 months, but in this case it was only about eight months before it was published, that means that any competitors would not have seen it before that published date, so the patent as published in that area is relatively new, that time you speak of before a patent is made is the Rand D period, it has to happen for any discovery, just ask Bill Gates and Steve jobs would have said the same as him, discovery takes time, so does the patent process, so what, it has to be protected, otherwise anyone else could just steal your idea anytime they wanted, that is the whole idea of making a patent lodgement, to protect your own ideas.
