Unless I am mistaken these patent applications were filed over three years ago. This was simply the final stage of that process (e.g. after consultation etc).
Whilst I consider it good news we received the patents (although I have no idea of the commerciality), I am not sure you can interpret it as SLX being proactive. Regardless of their feelings now, the patent would have been issued regardless.
