"Ten Million Solar Roofs Program passes US Senate Committee

Senator Sanders will take advantage of clean, renewable solar energy.On July 21st, 2010, the US Senate Energy Committee approved the "Ten Million Solar Roofs" bill by Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont), which calls for federal funding to install 10 million solar PV and hot water systems in US homes and businesses over ten years. The bill can now proceed to a full vote of the US Senate, though Senator Sanders has requested Senate Democratic leadership to include the bill in more comprehensive energy legislation. "We are losing the race for solar jobs, and falling behind other nations in solar installations. That must change", said Senator Sanders. "The question is whether we will take advantage of clean, renewable solar energy or let other countries create solar jobs using technology developed in America. I think we can lead, this bill will help us do that.

Ten Million Solar Roofs program

Senator Sanders' SB 3460, the Ten Million Solar Roofs program, would allocate USD$250 million in 2012 for competitive grants to fund solar programs at the state, tribe, county, city and town levels, with additional funding through 2010. System sizes eligible for funds would be limited to 1MW, and at least 2% of the funds would be available to Native American tribes. The legislation would fund the installation of up to 40GW of systems, and the US Department of Energy says the program, with existing incentives, could result in more than 10 million systems.

The naming of the bill is a tribute to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Million Solar Roofs Program, of which the highly successful California Solar Initiative is one component."
