Good questions.

I'm not suggesting we have no ability, but Revelation is a special case. It is so deeply symbolic that it can fit any prejudice it's needed to fit. The UN cops it left, right and centre, it and the Catholic church are targets for your belief, so it makes sense that a Brother would translate this piece of Revelation as being the UN. I doubt that the Bible authors ever received any divine instructions regarding the UN.

What makes me think Brother Knorr got it wrong is because the prophecies of Revelation have come to pass well before the UN came into being.

I bother to examine religion because it is foundational to human society. Regardless of how wrong we get religion it rectifies itself over time. As a kid you get dragged along to an endless procession of funerals, weddings and Christenings and I found the form of religion fascinating.

I wondered how a grown man could dress in such silly clothes and perform such silly rituals. I used to think that when they got home they would look at themselves in the mirror and say, why do I do this, it's all BS. But they don't. The nonsense goes on and on without much of a challenge.

I knew instinctively that religion was mostly a charade, but I was intrigued by the fact that even card carrying atheists like my family still conformed to the nonsense that pretended to be, of God.

So I guess I wondered if a real religion might ever present itself and now I'm pretty sure it has.

The other point is that your religion is not diminished if they stop trying to interpret prophecy all the time, especially Revelation which has brought every Christian sect undone. There are all the wonderful teachings that need no deep and insightful interpretation, but even here, Christendom gets a lot of these wrong.
