The companions/wife of Muhammad make observations - his explanations of the words of the Qur'an further to more divine guidance. I think you mean innovation (altetation/deviation) as opposed to shirk (taking partners/others in worship other than God). We have a broad "church" if you get my meaning in my local mosque some days - some using prayer beads like Catholics, some rocking backwards and forwards in prayer like Jewish, some repetitive chant to release their inner eye like Hindus. So lots of innovation lol lol - but we're not to judge others - just self-judging.

not innovation to pray five times they see it as adding to the Quran adding to the sufficiency of what Allah stipulated hence the application of additional prayers it falls in the category of shirk
