    Sadly it is posthumously.

I do not believe the powers that be have relaxed the high standard of heroism needed before they can award a VC but it sounds like there are more from Afghanistan then 'Nam. Maybe with the smaller numbers involved, the stories get heard rather than being lost in the noise.

At one stage I think Keith Payne VC was the only living recipient in Australia.

THE Victoria Cross has been awarded posthumously to Australian Corporal Cameron Baird, killed in Afghanistan in June 2013, Tony Abbott has announced.

The Prime Minister told parliament that Corporal Baird, of the Special Operations Task Group, was the 100th recipient of the highest military honour for bravery in wartime.

He was the 40th Australian to die in Afghanistan.
