Vale dam in Grande BH enters emergency level two due to rains
Alert recommends the removal of people from the self-rescue zone, but according to the mining company there are no residents in this area.

Capitão do Mato Dam, in Nova Lima, in the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region, of mining company Vale, entered emergency level two on Tuesday (11).  He recommends the removal of people in the self-rescue area.  However, according to the company, there are no residents in the area.

Vale informed that due to the rains of the last weeks, "some instruments of the structure pointed out temporary changes in the water level, having already, at this moment, returned to normal levels".  But the dam will remain preventively on alert until the completion of technical analyzes.

Residents of the self-rescue zone had already been evacuated in November last year because of reinforcement works at the Vargem Grande dam, which is at level 1 alert, when there is no need for evacuation.

According to Vale, the Capitão do Mato Dam is a sediment containment dam, built in a single stage, with a conventional landfill.  It is monitored by “piezometers, radars, robotic stations, video cameras, and by the Geotechnical Monitoring Center”.
