Some intersting issues raised about the way overseas eye docs get to Australia. See the anouncement in May regarding Dr Steyn's departure. Dr Steyn was filling an "area of need" (AON) position, which is are locations that was unable to be filled by local doctors - due to short fall of numbers, or more usually a short fall of attractiveness. These positions usually have to be supervised by a locally accedited specialist.

A number of overseas doctors who can get access to Australia using the AON option stay as long as they are required and then scoot to cosier pastures. Problem is that like Dr Steyn, the local regulatory authorities may not recognise their credentials. Again, not a great way to recruit specialists for VGH.

I wonder how many of the oveaseas VGH memnbers are in AON practices?
