    Hi John

    Interesting perspective:

"stalin had a million men in his army that had been denounced by 'politicals' as too suspect to return to russian peacetime society. the bloodbath as stalin used free thinking russians and eastern european prisoners of war in suicide attacks to swamp japan was worth avoiding at a far bigger price."

That would certainly play a part in Stalin's thinking. Who would want a million independent thinking problems returning to civil society after having looked death in the face and were therefore fearless? Wonder what happened to those million anyhow, as they weren't used in suicide attacks? Gulag archipelago?
    Probably.

"a world with with stalin ruling all korea, japan, and china, that was worth avoiding."

As it was, Stalin ruled China by proxy through Mao. Japan would have surrendered much earlier to the Americans if they had accepted the surrender. That would have been before the Russians were anywhere near able to invade Japan. Even a demonstration of the atom bomb would have had the same cautionary effect on the Russians as the real thing did on a civilian population so that still leaves the question as to why it was really dropped on Hiroshima.

    cheers
