Ok, let's imagine that there is a crack in the bridge, about 1 mm wide. The crack has been anbout the same for hundreads of years, opening and closing slightly with the seasons.
Suddenly in only 100 years, the crack has grown to 1.5 mm wide?
What do we do? Wait see if the bridge is going to collapse? Or try to find a way to fix it?
